Understand How Babies Sleep – The Baby Sleep Info Source website (BASIS)
Baby sleep can be one of the most challenging—and exhausting—parts of early parenthood.
The Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre, a leading research unit at Durham University in the UK, has spent more than 20 years studying how babies sleep and how parents care for them at night. Led by Professor Helen Ball, their researchers have followed thousands of families to better understand normal infant sleep and what parents can realistically expect during the first months and years of their baby’s life.
Launched by Professor Helen Ball and Dr Charlotte Russell of the Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre, The BASIS has easy-to-read, evidence-based information that can help families understand why babies wake frequently, how sleep patterns naturally change as babies grow, and what is biologically normal for infant sleep. With a better understanding of how infant sleep works, parents can set realistic expectations, feel more confident responding to their baby’s needs, and find practical ways to navigate the ever-changing world of baby sleep with a little more ease—and a lot less guilt.
At Booby Boss, we love resources that replace myths with evidence, and guilt with confidence—and this is one of our favourites.
Explore their resources here to learn what is normal, what to expect, and how to adjust through every stage of your baby’s sleep journey.
